‘The barge she sat in, like a burnish’d throne,

Burn’d on the water: the poop was beaten gold;

Purple the sails, and so perfumed that

The winds were love-sick with them;’

And then he gives me a penetrating look and says, ‘You remind me of Cleopatra, Felicity: a strong woman who has a dizzying effect on men.’

I say, ‘Thank you, but “dizzying” I think not.’ I giggle, showing my embarrassment but enjoying the compliment. ‘Once perhaps, but too old now.’

‘You’re not old,’ he says.

‘I have never told you how old I am.’

‘Surely no more than fifty.’

I laugh more loudly this time. ‘You flatter me. I suspect I am significantly older than you.’

‘How significantly? I’m not far off fifty-three.’

‘Significantly,’ I say, disappointed that the gap is so large and in the wrong direction. Because it is the wrong direction most of the time. Gianni taught me that. ‘Four years significantly.’

Coll doesn’t falter, but continues to quote from the play.
